Obituary for Rose Mary P "Penny" DeMartino (Sloan)

Rose Mary P. DeMartino “Penny”,89, of Brick, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2014 surrounded by the love of her family at home. Born in Imperial, PA to the late Samuel and Velma Sloan, Rose Mary went on to become a Registered Nurse and serve in the Woman’s Army Corps during World War II. She was under the direction of General Patton and served in a M.A.S.H. Unit OR, serving and saving the lives of many wounded soldiers. After World War II Rose Mary married the love of her life, Vincent and they resided in Manhattan and then Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and were longtime residents of Hazelt, before moving to Brick in 2005. Penny was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who proudly supported veterans, and enjoyed quality time spent with her family.
She was preceded in death by her brother James Sloan, and her beloved husband Vincent DeMartino.
Surviving are her devoted daughter and son-in-law Jen and Garry Bernstien, and her loving grandchildren Natali and Mike Bernstien.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00PM at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A Celebration of life will be held at 10:00AM on Thursday, August 14th at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Red Bank.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Penny’s memory to the Make a Wish foundation, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
