Obituary for E. Bernice Kernan McLaughlin

Elizabeth Bernice Kernan McLaughlin, 88, of Spring Lake, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Bernice was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Robert T. McLaughlin. Born in South Orange on August 11, 1927, Bernice was the daughter of Bartholomew F. and Elizabeth Morris Kernan. A graduate of Our Lady of Sorrows Grammar School and Columbia High School, both in South Orange, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree and New Jersey Teaching Certificate from Newark State Teachers College, now known as Kean University. Bernice taught elementary school in the West Orange and Harding Township School Systems for many years before relocating to California where her three children were born. Bernice and her family returned to New Jersey and settled in Basking Ridge where she resumed teaching in the Bernards Township School System, including at Oak Street School, Liberty Corner School, and Cedar Hill Elementary. After many years, Bernice relocated, once again, to Worthington, Ohio, where she lived for several years until her husband's death. She returned to New Jersey and lived for several years at Four Seasons in Manasquan; she then moved to The Essex and Sussex in Spring Lake where she enjoyed her home, the boardwalk and her friends there until her death.

Bernice was a member, for many years, of the American Association of University Women and volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
Bernice is survived by her by sons, Paul G. McLaughlin of Pennsylvania, and Brian K. McLaughlin of Belmar, NJ, and her daughter, Lisa McLaughlin of Red Bank, NJ, as well as her grandchildren, Berend and Sara McLaughlin. She also leaves her brother, Richard W. Kernan and wife, Margaret Murray, of Avon-by-the-Sea, and sister, Carol Flynn and husband, Richard, of Orange, CT. She also leaves brother-in-law John J. McLaughlin and wife MaryJean of Short Hills, NJ and sister-in-law Ann Palm and husband William of Massachusetts.

In addition to her husband, Bernice was predeceased by her brother, Bart, Jr. and sisters, Doris and Mary Kernan. She also leaves 15 nieces and nephews, more than thirty great-nieces and nephews, and many dear and devoted friends.

Bernice's family would like to express special thanks to the dedicated nurses of Jersey Shore University Medical Center CCU, whose kindness and care for Bernice was a comfort, both to her and her family.
Funeral services, etc.

Visitation will be at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall, on Sunday from 2-5pm. Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Catharine Church, 215 Essex Avenue, Spring Lake, on Monday at 10:30am. A Private Committal will take place at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of Monmouth County or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
