Paul Keating, M.D.
90 , of Bay Head, New Jersey, passed away on Sunday September 18, 2016. He was born December 13, 1925, in Manhattan, New York, grew up in Manhattan and Hillsdale, New Jersey. He was a graduate of the Lawrence Smith School, Phillips Exeter Academy, Yale College (1948) and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (1954). He was predeceased by his wife Patricia of 62 years who passed in 2012 and his eldest son, Paul, who in 1980 came to the aid of a stranger and was posthumously honored with The Bronze Medallion for heroism by The City of New York (Mayor Edward Koch). He was also predeceased by his father, John H. Keating M.D., mother Ellen Bourguardez and brothers John H. Keating Jr. M.D. and Richard P. Keating M.D. He is survived by his children, Anne, Ellen, James, Thomas, Philip and Stuart; and 14 grandchildren, ranging in age from 38 to 8 years old.

Corporal Paul Keating served during World War II in the 2nd Battalion, 274th Infantry Regiment of the 70th Division “The Trailblazers” of the United States Army. The Regiment was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for outstanding performance in combat during the period 5 to 7 January, 1945, at Wingen, France. By order of George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff these young men were recognized for surviving bitter cold, almost insurmountable supply problems without food or rest and destroying two German SS Battalions while liberating over 250 Americans held prisoner by German forces. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor.

Dr. Keating served with distinction at the cardiac clinic of St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Manhattan, was the co-founder of the coronary care unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern New York and recipient of the Sister Joseph Rita Award for Medical Excellence. He cared deeply about his patients and was appreciated for his bedside manner over a forty plus year medical career.

Paul retired with his wife Patricia to the New Jersey shore where he enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Visitation will take place at O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, on Friday, September 23, 2016, from 3-7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Bay Head, on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at 11 a.m. Those planning to attend the Mass are asked to go directly to the church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Paul's name to: The American Heart Association and/or the USO.
