Obituary for Margaret "Peg" McCarthy (Goetchius)

Margaret ‘Peg’ McCarthy, 93, of Avon and formally of Harrison, NJ passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 27, 2016.

Born in Newark, Peg lived in Harrison for more than eighty years until moving to her summer home ten years ago. Peg was predeceased by her husband Joseph F. McCarthy, her son Joseph A., her parents Henrietta and Arthur Goetchius, her brothers John and Arthur Goetchius, and her sisters Della Gavin, Jean Hofer, and Myra Dixon.

Peg was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She graduated from Harrison High School and later earned her Associates Degree from Saint Peters College at age 60. She was a Librarian and Secretary at Holy Cross Grammar School in Harrison for more than forty years and started a second career in her eighties selling beach badges on the Avon beach until she was 92. Peg was a devout Catholic and was a member of the St Elizabeth’s Rosary Society, Avon Senior Citizens, The Holy Cross Rosary Society, and the Holy Cross Vincentian Society and was a long time member of Harrison Free Public Library Board of Trustees. Gramma Peg enjoyed reading, discussing politics, sitting on her porch enjoying the breeze off the water and debating with her family. She lived a long and happy life and will be missed by many.

Peg is survived by her children Michael (Lucille), Wall, Mary Ann, Avon
Kathleen Peters (Arthur), Brick, Peggy Franco (John), Rhinebeck NY, Sheila Watson (Patrick), Avon, Pete (Suzanne), Neptune and her daughter-in-law Patrice McCarthy of Pittsburgh, PA; 11 grandchildren, Alex McCarthy, Casey Peters (Jamie), Jerry Peters (Jit), Kerry Redmond (Ralph), Matthew McCarthy, Sarah Watson, Owen Watson, Eric Franco, Daniel Franco, Margaret McCarthy and Katherine McCarthy; six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home. 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Sunday, October 30, 2016, from 4-8 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Church, Avon, on Monday, October 31, 2016, at 10 AM, followed by entombment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to her favorite charity, the American Cancer Society, 2310 Hwy. 34, Suite 1D, Manasquan, NJ 08736.
