Obituary for Ronald A. Schlegel

Ronald A. Schlegel, 91, of Brick, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at his home.
Mr. Schlegel was born and raised in Brooklyn, and served in the Navy during WW II. He later resided in Bridgewater, N.J., for 30 years, before retiring to Greenbriar, Brick, 16 years ago. He was a Licensed Professional Engineer and worked as a Special Assistant to the Commissioner for the City of New York Dept. of Transportation, for many years, before retiring. He also served as a Designated Night Mayor under Mayors Lindsay and Beame. While in Bridgewater, he was an elected member of the Township Council for many years and moonlighted as a Taxi Driver for Skyview Taxi, his daughter’s company. He was also a member of the Raritan Valley Players, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Knights of Columbus, and was an Extraordinary Minister at Holy Trinity Church, Bridgewater.

Mr. Schlegel was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Agnes (nee Crehan), on May 23, 2016. He was also predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Gertrude (nee Delaney) Schlegel, and his sister, Ruth Hogan. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Donna and Sam Cameroni, Karen and Steve Becker, Ron and Virginia Schlegel, Darrin Schlegel, and Laura and Garry Forsythe. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alyssa, Michael, Chiara, Amanda, Erin, Rachel, Dillon and Austin, and his great-grandchildren, Declan and Carver, as well as by other relatives and friends.

Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Dominic Church, Brick, on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at 10 AM, followed by burial, with military honors, at the N.J. Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.
