Elizabeth Austin McCarthy age 95 of Manasquan, NJ died on Friday, July 07, 2017 at her home surrounded by family. Born in Mansfield, Ohio, Elizabeth lived in Scottsdale, AZ, Sonoma, CA, Spring Lake and Sea Girt, NJ before moving to the Four Seasons in 2000. She was a parishioner of St. Mark's Church in Sea Girt.
Elizabeth attended St. Peter’s High School and graduated from Mansfield High School. She attended Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan and the Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland, Ohio. Elizabeth trained in the vocal arts at Steinway Hall in New York City, also studying at Julliard and privately at Carnegie Hall. She was a pupil of Wilfred Engelman at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.
During World War II, she served in the US Navy and toured with the WAVE Chorus as a soloist and was one of the original Ray Charles Singers. She also performed on the concert stage and on the radio in Ohio, Michigan and New York. Elizabeth was a charter member and soloist of the St. Catharine’s Choir in Spring Lake.
She enjoyed playing the piano, singing, writing poetry and, of course, the opera. She had a tremendous love of nature. She was also an athlete - an expert swimmer, ice skater and yoga practitioner. Later in life she became an avid football, baseball and tennis fan.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents John and Veronica “Vera” Austin, her sister Kathryn Marie Austin and by her beloved husband William B. McCarthy in 2008.
Elizabeth was a devoted mother to her 9 children. Surviving are 5 sons and their spouses; Bryan W. and Dolores of Mill Valley, CA, Robert A. and Suzanne of Port Charlotte, FL, Sean E. and Susan of Spring Lake, Mark F. of Stuart, FL, and Michael J. and Diane of Sea Girt, and 4 daughters and their spouses; Kathryn M. McCarthy (late husband David Blanchard) of Manhattan, NY, Jean E. and Albert DeCharleroy of Great Falls, VA, Claire L. McCarthy and David Roden of Manasquan, Meeghan McCarthy and Richard Dumas of New Rochelle, NY, 16 grandchildren; Nathan, Jeanette, Kristin, Robert, Sean, Kelly, Gregory, Olivia, Vanessa, William, Ian, Arielle, Austin, Christianne, Autumn and Matthew. She also leaves 13 great grandchildren; Curren William, Jade, Jordan, Ivy, Kaylee, Julianna, Brennan, Presley, Sean Kenneth, Ellery Jane, Nella Grace, Addison G. and Logan A.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, July 13th at St. Mark's RC Church in Sea Girt. Entombment followed in St. Catharine Cemetery, Sea Girt, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to a charitable organization in which you and Elizabeth shared an interest.
