Mary E.  Stafford (Bergin)
Mary E. Stafford, 84, of Spring Lake, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Wellington Estates Assisted Living, Wall.
Mrs. Stafford (nee Bergin) was born and raised in Jersey City and was a proud alumna of St. Dominic Academy. She moved to the Shore in 1958 and had lived in Spring Lake since 1963. At age 40 she returned to school, earning her Nursing degree at Brookdale Community College. She went on to a distinguished career as an R.N. at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she worked for over 20 years before retiring. She was a founding member of HPAE Local 5058 (a nurse’s union) and was Past-President of the St. Catharine School PTA. In her leisure time she enjoyed the North End Beach, playing bridge and wintering in West Palm Beach.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband R. Glen in 2015, her son Matthew in 1980, her son-in-law Jim Spillane, and her brothers, John and Vincent Bergin. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Spillane of Spring Lake, Mary Beth and Larry White of Sea Girt, Gregory Stafford and Barbara Lutz of Shark River Hills, and Cambi and Jim Mannion of Brielle.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Shannon (Daniel Lukin Beck), Tara (Andrew Sisock), Brian Spillane and Kerry Mauk (John), Matthew White (Camille) Bridget White, John White, and Colin, Audrey, Kelly & Jane Mannion. Also surviving are Mary’s three great-grandchildren, Celia and Margaux White and August Beck.
Mary is also survived by her siblings, Leo Bergin, Teresa Rigney and Catherine Cassidy, as well as nephews and nieces.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral, 2028 Highway 35, Wall, NJ on Friday, March 9, 2018, from 2:30-5:30 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake, on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 10:30 AM, followed by interment at St. Catharine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to St. Dominic’s Academy, 2572 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ 07304.
