Obituary for Leonard Brigham Faupel

Leonard Brigham Faupel, 90, of Sea Girt, N.J. passed away on March 22, 2011.

Born in Irvington, N.J. on June 24, 1920, Mr. Faupel graduated from Irvington High School in 1937. At the outbreak of WWII, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and served in Intelligence for the 8th Air Force, earning a Bronze Star, a Presidential Citation (Division Award) and three campaign ribbons. Returning from the war in 1945, he went to work at P. Ballantine & Sons Brewery in Newark. There, Len fell in love with and married Jacqueline Kuett in 1947. The couple settled in Maplewood, N.J.

Mr. Faupel’s professional career in marketing and advertising spanned 40 years. At Ballantine, Len became Advertising and Public Relations Director. He oversaw Ballantine’s sponsorship of the Yankees and football Giants, and helped pioneer the explosive growth of televised sporting events we take for granted today.

From Ballantine, Mr. Faupel was hired as Senior Vice President at William Esty Co. in New York City. His creative talents promoted brands including Mastercard, Seagram, Colgate, Genesee Beer and SAS Airlines.

Len was a dedicated family man and community servant. He chaired the Maplewood Recreation Committee for ten years and was President of the Maplewood Little Club. After retiring in 1985, Mr. Faupel moved with Jacqueline to Sea Girt where he served on the Planning Board. An avid craftsman, he and Mrs. Faupel built two homes in Sea Girt.

Active and engaged all his life, Mr. Faupel directed considerable time and energy to organizations dedicated to special needs individuals; in particular, the Bancroft School, where he was a member of the Board of Trustees, Chair of the Board of Rehabilitation Services, and a member of several other boards. In recent years, Len served as a board member of Plan/New Jersey, an organization whose mission is to ensure lifetime good care for individuals with special needs.

In addition to his beloved wife, Jacqueline, Len is survived by sons Mark and John, daughter Caroline Keating, granddaughters Erinn and Jessica, grandsons Matthew Devlin and Sean, sister Nancy Benner and family, and many more beloved extended family members and treasured friends.

Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, N.J., on Saturday, March 26, 2011, from 2-5 P.M. A service will take place at the funeral home at 5 P.M. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Bancroft Foundation, to Plan/New Jersey, or to other special needs charities.
