Obituary for Eleanor K. Callas (Korh)

Eleanor K. Callas, 87, of Brick, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Sunday, July, 14, 2019 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick with her family at her side.

Born and raised in Bayonne, she moved to Wood-Ridge, later to Silver Beach, and finally to Brick in 1986 to a riverfront home, she and her husband built. She loved her beach and river homes.

Eleanor worked as a payroll manager at Maiden Form in Bayonne and later on at Marcal Paper Mills. She retired early to take care of her family and home.

Eleanor contended with many health challenges over the years but soldiered on with grace—until the very end. She had crippled hands from rheumatoid arthritis, was blind in one eye, yet filled her pill box by herself, kept a spotless home, balanced her checkbook and rarely asked for help.

She loved going to AC, where she played the poker slots and was quite the notorious winner. Her mind remained sharp. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles and kept up with current events. She was a fantastic baker and made the best iced tea, all of which her family is unable to reproduce. She loved the simple things in life: watching the boats on the river; calls and visits from friends and family, including Maureen and her dog Roscoe from across the street; and getting the Ocean Star paper each week.

Eleanor was predeceased by her loving husband, John George Callas in 2012; parents, Peter and Mary Korh (nee Zakutansky); and all of her siblings. Surviving are her children, Barbara Callas and her husband Jonnie Miles of NYC, Steven Callas and his wife Evelyn of Brick, and Kimberly Callas and her husband Brad Kunz of Warren; two sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and their children, and one dear cousin, all from many states across the country.

For those of you who showed kindness and love to Ellie, the family is eternally grateful. We love you, Mom. It will never be the same without you, but it’s your time to rest and be at peace in heaven.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2019 from 11-3 pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. Friends and relatives may also visit on Monday, July 22, 2019 from 11:30am – 1:30pm in the funeral home. A prayer service will be conducted on Monday at 1:30pm in the funeral home followed committal prayers at Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her memory to the Jersey Shore Rescue Mission in Asbury Park, NJ or an animal shelter of your choice.
