Obituary for Audrey Florence McDermott (Sakany)
Audrey F. (nee Sakany) McDermott, 98 of Avon-by-the-Sea passed away peacefully Saturday, January 23, 2021 at home in Spring Lake.
Audrey was born and raised in New York City, and lived in Closter, NJ for many years, where she raised her family. She then moved to Avon-by-the-Sea where she served on the Board of Education before ultimately moving into her daughter’s home in Spring Lake.
Audrey was a devout Catholic. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Church, Closter and St. Elizabeth’s Church, Avon-by-the-Sea. She received her undergraduate and Masters of Science in Education from Hunter College. Audrey taught at the Academy of the Holy Angels High School, Demarest, NJ.
Audrey was predeceased by her husband John V. McDermott, Sr., her daughter Marie and her parents Charles and Joanna (nee Jenkins) Sakany. Surviving are her devoted children and their spouses John V. McDermott, Jr., of Hampton, NJ, Charles W. McDermott and Janet of Augusta, NJ, JoAnn A. Reed and Kevin, and Gary A. McDermott and Cheryl all of Spring Lake. She is also survived by her brother Charles Sakany and wife Jeri of Vero Beach, FL, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 nephew, 4 nieces and loyal dog Jocko V.
Mass of Christian Burial and Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake, NJ 07762 in memory of Audrey.
