Obituary for August B. "Gus" Herrmann

August B. "Gus" Herrmann, passed peacefully at his Manasquan home on December 18th.
Gus joins his beloved wife of over 61 years, Pat, in God's Eternal Home.

Gus and Pat were active residents of Manasquan for 58 years after previously residing in, Irvington, NJ and Union, NJ respectively. The eldest son of amazing immigrant parents, Gus attended St. Benedicts Prep, then Seton Hall University, his college career being prolonged by his Army SP-3 service to our country, overseas. Post college, looking for advancement, Gus landed at NJ Bell/AT&T which opened many doors professionally and socially. For a decade, Gus was the passionate Head Coach of the Boy's Basketball Team at St. Denis in Manasquan while also managing baseball teams and eventually umpiring games with the Manasquan Brielle Little League. He was a councilman with the Borough of Manasquan as well as President of the Manasquan area Chapter of Jaycees. Gus, later served as President of the Wall Area Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of the Route 34 Group. More recently, Gus was President of Broad Data Systems Inc. and the Paradigm Group.

Gus was an avid runner, completing 15 full marathons and 22 half marathons. He ran over 130 road races.
He played in a semi-pro table tennis league, enjoyed a lengthy softball career and for a long period enjoyed golf matches at various courses up and down the East Coast. More often than not, you could find the New York Yankees on TV at the Herrmann House and Gus was a devout Duke Basketball fan. He and Pat spent much of their free time, driving their children to sporting events and later followed their five boys' careers in basketball, baseball and softball, all the while staying involved in the community. Describing his life, Gus would say, " I ran the Race, I kept the Faith, I Cared."

Gus was predeceased by his parents August and Elisabeth along with his wife Patricia Ann Reddington Herrmann. He is survived by his brother, Edgar "Hans" Herrmann and wife Mary Katheryn, Gillette, NJ., his brother-in-law Robert Reddington and wife Barbara, Springfield, N.J. and his five sons and their wives; Paul and Adele, Tom and Alyssa, Mark and Pam, Matt and Gioia and John and Carolyn. He is also survived by granddaughters; Cristin, Meredith, Jenna, Jamie, Gianna, Jordanna, Alexandra, Josephine and Mia and grandson Jaxson as well as great grand kids; Cameron, Penelope and Finnley. "Pop Pop" Herrmann was adored by his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of the Sea Chapel in Manasquan will be held on January 6, 2021 at 10 am. Due to the current situation related to Covid-19, unfortunately there will be limited seating. Masks will be required to attend the mass.
