Obituary for Camille Kenny (Loffredo)
Camille Loffredo Kenny of Spring Lake passed away on Thursday, April 8 several weeks after celebrating her 99th birthday.
She was born on March 21, 1922, the fifth of six children of Italian immigrants Pietro (Peter) Loffredo and Julia Vena Loffredo and named Camilla after her maternal grandmother. She was raised in Jersey City where her father owned a butcher shop. She often fondly recalled her childhood with her siblings and many friends, including trips down to the beach in Long Branch where she watched a young Frank Sinatra play the ukulele on the boardwalk.
She graduated from Saint Aloysius Academy in Jersey City in 1939 and Berkley Secretarial School, now Berkley College, in 1940. Following graduation and during the war years, she worked at Western Electric in New York City.
In 1946, she married Charles Kenny, a veteran just home from serving in the Army in France and Germany. She and Charles would have four children and spend the next 54 years together until he passed away in 2000. Once her children reached school age, she began working in the computer science department at Jersey City State College, now New Jersey City University. She worked at the college for the next several decades and also obtained her bachelor’s degree while working there.
After retiring, she joined her husband as a full-time resident in Spring Lake where she became an integral and beloved member of the community. She spent her summers at the ocean and pool and was a regular working out at the Atlantic Club well into her 90s. She welcomed her grandchildren, for whom she was known as “Da”, into her home throughout their childhoods and gave them the priceless gift of many wonderful summers at the beach.
She relished her role as the matriarch of her large, extended family. She linked seven generations, from her great-grandmother, whom she remembers from her childhood and who was born nearly two-hundred years ago, to her great-grandchildren, who will carry their memories of Da into the next century.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her three sisters, Rose, Angela and Anne, and her two brothers, Anthony and John. She is survived by her four children, daughter Joanne and her partner Gail Solimine, son Charles Jr. and his wife Cathy, daughter Jane and her husband Greg Myer and daughter Camille and her husband Bill Conroy; six grandchildren, granddaughter Jessica Tomkins and her husband Frank Mastroianni, grandson CP Kenny and his wife Julie Ciarlone Kenny, grandson Tom Kenny and his wife Ana Faria, granddaughter Elizabeth Myer and her husband Andres Egoavil, grandson Greg Myer and his wife Cally Orme and granddaughter Julia Conroy; six great-grandchildren, Kether Tomkins, Octavia Mastroianni, Ryan Kenny, Michaela Kenny, James Kenny and Freyja Egoavil; several dozen nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, and countless cherished friends from her years in Jersey City and Spring Lake.
Her family would like to give special thanks to Camille’s wonderful caregivers, Deb Padia and Ingrid Banfield, who helped make it possible for Camille to spend her final year comfortably and happily in her beloved Spring Lake home. Services will be private for family only.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donation be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Camille’s favorite charity.
