Obituary for Charles Michael Meehan

Charles Michael Meehan was born in Bronx NY on May 23rd, 1937 to John and Mary Ann Meehan and went home to be with his Lord on Monday, May 16, 2022. Parents, John and Mary Ann immigrants from Ireland settled in the Fordham section of the Bronx on Marion Ave. Charles had an older brother John Meehan(Point Pleasant Beach) and younger sister Elizabeth Mylod(Oradell NJ), both deceased.   An avid reader at Our Lady of Mercy school, Charles was able to earn a full academic scholarship to the prestigious Regis High School located in Manhattan, a private school run by the Jesuits. He graduated top of his class and earned another academic scholarship to attend Fordham University in the Bronx. He graduated Fordham with a double major in Mathematics and Greek Studies.

Upon graduation Charles had dedicated himself to the Lord by joining the Benedictine Order of Monks. Over the next 10 years he would harness the love and kindness he received from family and friends and his faith in the catholic church to serve God in a monastic life. During this period he would spend time at Weston Priory in Vermont as a disciple of God’s words and time at Jerusalem University studying the context of the Bible. After leaving the Order he would spend the next 30+ years teaching at Jerusalem University and Leiden University in the Netherlands. His area of discipline was religious studies. Charles would go on to learn 8 different languages, Aramaic, the language of Jesus being one of them.

During his summers  Charles would split his time between his brother John in Point Pleasant Beach and his sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Charlie Mylod vacationing at the beach in Belmar NJ. Charles loved walking and reading on the boardwalk as well as dropping countless quarters at the arcade with his 3 nephews, Charlie, Eddie and John.  A quiet man in general, Charles was able to forge a close knit group of friends throughout the world staying in touch with them through travel and intimate letters of friendship. His fondness for such friends were always on display with open arm hugs. Charles also had an endearing howl when he laughed. Never more present amongst his family, The Meehan’s and Cullen’s.

Charles practiced love and kindness each day he graced this earth and our lives. One could say each day was a liturgy for him. God Bless Chuck, we miss and love you with all our hearts.

“Oh Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise!”  Psalm 50:17
