Obituary for Daniel J. Carey

Daniel J. Carey, 68, of Manasquan, formerly of Morristown and West Orange, entered eternal rest on July 22, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his beloved wife Moira McEnroe Carey and family members.

Dan grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn and was one of four attorney sons of the late Gerard and Helen (Lynch) Carey. He was a member of the last graduating class of Brooklyn Prep in 1972. Dan also earned both his Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall University.

Recently retired from his private law practice, Dan began his career as an Assistant Essex County Prosecutor. He also served as an attorney for the City of New York, before engaging in his own practice, focusing on estate planning and real estate matters.

Dan relished entertaining family and friends. He was a gracious host and formidable cook. A captivating conversationalist, above all he was a gentle man. He was graced with a wry sense of humor and enjoyed sharing tales on his front porch at sunset.

Dan and Moira were blessed with a devoted partnership. They loved the Shore and enjoyed traveling, especially regular sojourns to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where they had recently purchased a home. Long walks along the ocean, visiting local restaurants and rounds of golf were also passions.

An active member of his communities, Dan served the West Orange St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and was active in local politics. His later tenure on his condominium board led toward numerous improvements to the complex’s infrastructure and corresponding enhancement of value for residents.

Dan is survived by his cherished wife, Moira, his favorite mother-in-law, Margaret McEnroe, his siblings-in-law Elizabeth, Harry, Paul, Brian, Thomas and Robert McEnroe. He also leaves his brothers Gerard, Christopher and Michael Carey, along with many devoted nieces, nephews and longtime friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, July 29, 2022 at 9:30am at St. Mark’s Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt. Interment in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan’s name are welcome for Seton Hall University, 400 South Orange Avenue, South Orange, N.J.
