Obituary for David Charles Marcks

David Marcks passed away peacefully at home in Wall, NJ on Friday, January 7, 2022 with his wife and children at his side.

Born in Point Pleasant, NJ on July 9, 1963 and raised in Brick, NJ, Dave was industrious at a very young age working on the Norma K Deep Sea Fishing Charter Boat as first mate, Loew’s Movie Theaters, Herbertsville Real Estate Company, and many others before he started as a golf course superintendent at Fairview Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut. It was there that that he first encountered the geese problem facing golf courses. Dave trained his border collie, Cap, to herd the flocks of geese from the golf course grounds. He became well known and in demand to help other golf courses eliminate the geese from their grounds. Inspired by this successful model, his business, Geese Police was born. The business was an early success and grew so large that Dave franchised the concept. He now owns 17 franchises in 13 states. He recently opened new offices on West Hurleys Pond Road in Wall, NJ. He was the creator and master who many have tried to imitate.

For many years, Dave and his partner hosted rodeo events on Friday nights where amateur cowboys could compete in team penning. Dave was a skilled rider and was always willing to partner with anyone who needed one. He especially loved working with the children and was a patient teacher for those who wanted to learn the cowboy way. He was part of a group that taught team penning at the Ocean County fair for 4H. Dave had many horses over the years including Future, Jazz, and Destiny. His current horses are Doc and Hidalgo who he rode in local parades. Dave always had a way with animals and had a special relationship with Buckshot, the Texas Long-Horn who would come to the fence when called so that Dave could easily climb on his back and ride him.

After September 11th, Dave organized an event he called Cowboy Adventure. First responders from New York City were joined by local firemen and police to compete in team penning on foot. This event raised over $10,000 to benefit the Howell First Aid Squad.

Dave was very community oriented. He volunteered with the US Bird Strike Committee, the Howell Chamber of Commerce, the Howell Planning Board, and the Barnegat Fire Department. Dave was a great supporter of the Howell PBA, and law enforcement in general and he was always eager to assist in any way possible. In 2008, Dave was honored by the Local PBA with a Silver Life Membership card, the highest honor that can be given to a civilian by the NJSPBA. He was a huge supporter of the Howell K9 unit and helped to secure K9 Tank and K9 Phantom.

Dave loved children and enjoyed working with them. He was a long-time supporter of the Howell Police Athletic League. Dave recently received a silver Pal 4 Life award honoring his dedication and commitment to the children of Howell.

After his marriage to Diane, they opened Runway 34 Restaurant and Bar which was a great friends and family establishment. Regrettably, they had to close Runway in 2017 and the live music and friendly atmosphere is missed by many to this day.

Every weekend in the summer Dave worked alongside his wife, Diane, at the Osprey nightclub in Manasquan which was owned for over 30 years. He enjoyed mingling with the crowd and even breaking up the occasional fight. He was always happy to oblige the patrons who wanted their picture taken with the Cowboy. Dave was a well-recognized and sought-after personality there and surely will be missed.

Dave loved the warm weather, boating, and fishing and was currently a resident of Pompano Beach, Florida where he quickly made new friends. He loved to watch the sun rise over the water every morning. People were drawn to his outgoing personality and his generosity toward anyone who needed a hand. Two days before he passed, he completed a project for a neighbor who needed him.

David was predeceased by his parents Carl and Agnes Marcks. He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Marcks. Dave was a father to Diane’s children Nicolina of Georgia, Teresa and Peter of South Carolina, and Perry of North Carolina and their spouses. Dave was proud of his thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Richard of Connecticut, sisters Mary and Diane of Florida, Agnes and Beverly of New Jersey, stepbrothers Henry and George of New Jersey, and step-sister Beverly of New Jersey their spouses and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, January 14th from 4 -8 pm at O’Brien Funeral Home 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd, Wall. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 am at O’Brien Funeral Home followed by the entombment at St Anne’s Cemetery, 1610 Allenwood Rd, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Howell PAL, P.O. Box 713, Howell, NJ 07731 in his name.
