Obituary for Dr. Edward A. Brennan Jr.

Dr. Edward A. Brennan Jr., 89 of Sea Girt, NJ and Stuart, FL passed away peacefully Saturday, January 20, 2024 at his Sea Girt home surrounded by his loving daughters.

Dr. Brennan “Ed” was born on April 13, 1934 in Savannah, GA to the late Edward A. and Elizabeth (nee Canty) Brennan Sr.

Ed attended high school at Benedictine Military Academy in Savannah, GA and completed his undergraduate studies at Mt. St. Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, MD. He went on to graduate from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and Columbia University, where he specialized in Orthodontia.

Ed proudly served as a Captain in the United States Army, and was stationed in Germany, from 1959 until his discharge in 1961. His love of country remained unwavering until the end.

Ed married the love of his life, Gail Gallagher, on April 27, 1963.  They settled in Sea Girt, NJ in 1965, where they raised their four children.  Ed opened his Orthodontia practice in Sea Girt in 1964 and practiced for 36 years before retiring in 2000. He is personally responsible for thousands of beautiful smiles.

Ed was a deeply religious man and a devout member of the Catholic faith. He was a Communicant of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt, NJ and St. Christopher Church, Hobe Sound, FL.  He maintained a residence in Stuart, FL and was a member of the Mariner Sands Country Club as well as the Manasquan River Golf Club in Brielle, NJ.

Ed was a passionate and talented golfer, who had a swing “like butter.”  After retirement, he eagerly worked to perfect his golf game, and enjoyed being out on the links as often as possible. He was a legend on the putting green.  He loved to read and study various languages and taught himself to speak German and French. He was a gifted writer and took great pleasure in writing long letters to family and friends.  He was an avid photographer and bird watcher. He enjoyed walking on the boardwalk, riding his bike, reading his Wall Street Journal and talking politics with family and friends. He had a truly unique and wonderful sense of humor and an incredibly quick wit; his classic one liners will live on in infamy.  Above all else, Ed cherished his family and friends.  He will be deeply missed by many and has blessed us all with so many beautiful memories.

He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Gail (nee Gallagher) Brennan on Feb. 20. 2010 and his cherished son Edward “Teddy” Brennan on Sept. 11, 2001 from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Surviving him are his three devoted daughters and their spouses Sheila Brennan-Capparis and husband Philip Capparis of Sea Girt, Ellen Brennan-Krebs “Amy” and husband Peter Krebs of Spring Lake, and Elizabeth and Michael Murphy of Sea Girt, his 11 grandchildren: Michael, Christopher, Caroline and Grace Capparis, Emma, Sophie, Elinor, and Charlotte Krebs, Edward Brennan Moran, Michael James and Matthew Murphy, brother-in-law Paul E. Gallagher of Sea Girt, and his dear cousin Mary Elizabeth Canty of Tybee Island, GA.
