Obituary for Dr. Gerald Guy Suarez

Dr. Gerald (Guy) Suarez passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Guy was born in Lima Peru on August 8, 1937, the only son of Dr. Gay Suarez and Eldemira Hudtwalcker-Suarez. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Maria Falconi and Eldemira (Mimi) LaHoz.

Guy graduated from San Marcos Medical School in Lima, and came to the United States in 1966 to complete his surgical residency at Newark City Hospital. While there he was drafted into the United States Army and served as a surgeon in Bamberg, Germany. He later was sent to Cambodia where he served as a Battalion surgeon for the 1st Calvary Division and a trauma surgeon at the 3D Surgical Hospital in Binh Thuy Vietnam. Dr. Suarez received many commendations to include the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in combat operations against hostile forces.

Upon his return, he completed his surgical residency at Monmouth Medical Center and was board certified. He served another tour of duty in Panama and concluded his service in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel (LTC).

Pursuing his love of medicine, he took further training in trauma and critical care at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Staten Island, NY; after which, he was in private practice at Jersey Shore Hospital until his retirement in 1999.

Guy was very proud of his adopted country. He enjoyed music, sports and was a great proponent of physical fitness. He loved entertaining, especially hosting or organizing the Peruvian Independence Day celebration every July 28th. He never came across a stranger, friend or relative he wouldn’t help, a stray cat he didn’t love or a bird he wouldn’t feed. However, his greatest love was for his family.

Papi, as he was known to them, is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Dr. Norina Carnevale; his daughter Angelique Suarez and her husband, Sergio Jachtchenco of Miami; his son, Guy Suarez and his wife, Michele Jerz of Wall. And always bringing a smile to his face were his three beloved grandsons Nicolas Jachtchenco, Christian and John Suarez; also, several nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Peru.

The family would like to give special thanks to Rodel Guerrero and the Meridian Hospice Team for their kindness and support.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Meridian Hospice Team.
