Obituary for E. Paul Ernst

E. Paul Ernst, Jr., 72, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center with his wife and daughter by his side. Paul had been courageously fighting various health issues since August of 2019. Born in Allentown, PA, he was raised in Millington, NJ and spent happy childhood and young adult summers at his grandparents’ home in Bay Head, loving to surf and fish. After marrying into the “Heyman Clan” as he affectionately called them, Ocean City, NJ quickly became another beach town he loved. Paul resided in the Matawan section of Old Bridge with his family for many years. But since 2001 his beloved Jersey Shore has been his home after moving to Point Pleasant Beach and then settling in Manasquan in 2005. It has been a great joy for the last twenty years for Paul to begin and end each day smelling the ocean air and listening for the waves.

Paul graduated from Watchung Hills Regional High School where he excelled at many sports including soccer, tennis, basketball, and track and field. He received a soccer scholarship to West Virginia University where he played on the tennis as well as the soccer teams and was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. After graduating WVU with a degree in Business Administration and owning multiple businesses, Paul spent the final sixteen years of his career as a Senior Project Manager/Estimator with the Sudler Companies of Chatham and also developing many residential real estate projects of his own.

Paul was predeceased by his parents Edwin Paul Ernst and Virginia Helbig, mother and father-in-law Cecil E. Heyman Jr. and Wilma D. Heyman, and brother-in-law and dear friend Rodney K. Kiester. He is survived by his adored wife, Susan Jane; cherished daughter, Melissa Freeman and her husband, John; devoted sister, Priscilla and her husband, John; treasured grandchildren, Summer Jane and Tyler John, along with many loving brother and sisters-in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Paul’s name to Shriners Hospitals for Children at lovetotherescue.org or to the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success Program at ussoccerfoundation.org/donate. To send condolences, please visit www.obrienfuneralhome.com.
