Edward M. Zimny, 86, of Point Pleasant passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019 at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood.
Mr. Zimny was a proud 50+ year member and union official with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners in Edison before retiring. He was a strong proponent of creating “family-sustaining” jobs, and firmly believed that a union environment assisted in achieving that goal. He was a devout catholic, and member of Sacred Heart RC Church in Bay Head where he found so much joy in serving as an usher and a member of the Holy Name Society.
“The Hammer”, in which he was affectionately known to all, was an institution within the Jersey Shore fishing scene, where he and several very close friends and associates, spent all their available time. Additionally, he especially enjoyed his frequent fishing-related outings to New England, Chesapeake Bay, North Carolina, and Florida.
Born and raised in Elizabeth, he then served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War era in Newport, RI before moving full-time to Point Pleasant in 1967.
Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Helyn Zimny; 3 sons, Edward M.A. Zimny of Bay Head, Thom Zimny of NYC, and Paul Zimny of Point Pleasant; brother, Richard Zimny and his wife, Barbara of Rochester, MN; sister, Lorraine Rinaldo of Springfield; and 8 grandchildren, Christian, Hunter, Austin, Noah, Bridget, Ryan, Grace and Sophie. Mr. Zimny was predeceased by a sister, Helen Kossak in 2015.
A Funeral Mass will be offered 10am on Friday, September 20, 2019 at Sacred Heart RC Church, 751 Main Avenue, Bay Head. Final interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to The Crippled Children’s Foundation, 2019 4th Ave., North, Birmingham, AL 35203.
