Obituary for Eileen J. McGurl

Eileen Jane (Hogan) McGurl, 90, of Brick, formerly of Allenhurst, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2023.  She had just celebrated her 90th birthday in September.

Eileen was born on September 26, 1932 to Michael and Mary (Molly) Hogan in the Bronx, NY.  She was the one girl born to six brothers, all of whom she doted on and loved with all her heart.

After graduating Columbus High School, Eileen went on to business school where she excelled at shorthand and typing, which served her well through her future years as a secretary.

She met the love of her life, James McGurl in the spring of 1950 and they were married in April of 1951.  Together they raised seven children. In 1973, they moved the family and her parents down to Allenhurst, NJ where she lived for 50 wonderful years with her growing family.

Eileen loved to be around family whenever possible. She especially loved cooking, baking and enjoying big family meals on Sundays and holidays. One of her favorite pastimes included playing Mahjong on Wednesday afternoons, working at the John C. Conover Agency for 37 years, sharing stories of her childhood with her grandchildren, playing Rummikub and Skip Bo as well as being a second Mom to Paul and Eileen.  She would always be excited when her brothers would come to visit and looked forward to each visit fondly. Her faithful companion, Bear, was always a comfort during afternoon naps.

Eileen’s love and heart were evident in the family she raised and friends she knew. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren knew the love she shared with everyone. Both her daughter, Noreen and son, David were a constant support for Eileen during her later years, offering her companionship, laughter and love.

Eileen is predeceased by her parents Mike and Molly Hogan; husband, Jim McGurl, brothers Michael, Jack, Ed, Bill; and son-in-law, Gerald Rubano.  She is survived by her seven children, Thomas McGurl and his wife, Nancy of Wayside, James McGurl and his wife, Joanne of Melbourne, FL, Eileen Rubano of Howell, Michael McGurl and his wife, Judy of Fair Haven, Mary Henderson and her husband, Peter of West Allenhurst, David McGurl of Brick, and Noreen McGurl of Brick; grandchildren, Patrick, Katie and her husband, Brock, Jimmy Joe, Thomas and his wife, Ginger, Paul, Molly, Eileen, Meagan, Emily and Aidan; great-granddaughters, Madison, Hayat, Charlotte and Clover; brother, Daniel Hogan and his wife, Irene of Carmel, NY; sister-in-law, Marie Hogan of Florida; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, NJ 08724 on Thursday, January, 26th, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00PM. Eileen’s funeral mass will be held in St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 46 Richmond Ave, Deal, NJ 07723 on Friday, January 27, 2023 at 11:00AM. Please meet at the church.
