Obituary for Elizabeth Papsdorf (Forbes)

Elizabeth Stewart (Forbes) Papsdorf died Jan.17, 2023 at age 101 following a stroke.

Betty was born August 5, 1921 at Englewood Hospital to Wilson Black Forbes and Mary (MacLachlan) Forbes. Her uncle was B.C. Forbes, founder of Forbes Magazine, the father of Malcolm and Wallace Forbes. 

Betty lived in Palisades Park and attended Leonia H.S. She studied at Katherine Gibbs in NYC and worked at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co during WWII as a secretary and expeditor.

While there, she married F. Warren Papsdorf, who predeceased her in 2001. Her only brother, Campbell Forbes, also died in 2001.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Donna Ubriaco, Marcia Papsdorf Hernandez, Mauricio Hernandez, Cynthia Benkert, Stanley Benkert, Lorna Phillipson and former son-in-law, Alan Phillipson, Gale Kirchner, her grandchildren: Christian, Mauricio, Scott, Warren, and seven great-grandchildren. 

After living in Nassau County and Syracuse NY, the family moved to the Jersey Shore in 1964. Betty was last employed at Monmouth Medical Center as the Assistant to the Director of HR.

She and Warren retired in 1983 as empty nesters moving to Fairway Mews, Spring Lake Heights to enjoy their golf and bridge. At the Mews, she and neighbor Maryann Houton created and maintained a community library. Betty and friend, Irene McLaughlin, organized monthly casino trips, as well as cruises and overseas travel. She volunteered with several organizations, notably the thrift shop at Jersey Shore Medical Center.

Betty and Warren were avid travelers and spent winters in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Florida.

A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be Sunday, February 26, 2023, 11 am at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Spring Lake.
