Obituary for Elizabeth Jane Starr Chapple

Elizabeth Jane Starr Chapple, age 98, passed away on Wednesday, February 24,2021 at Sunnyside Manor in Wall. Born and raised in Washington, DC, Elizabeth and her husband were married in May 1947 and resided in Roslyn, NY for many years before moving to Spring Lake Heights where they resided in Fairway Mews.

Mrs. Starr was the President of the first graduating class of 1940 of The Mary Lewis Academy in Jamaica Estates, NY and was the inaugural President of TMLA Alumnae Association. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle, NY, majoring in business. She went on to work as a Financial Analyst for Avis in Garden City, NY for many years.

Elizabeth was a parishioner of St. Mary’s RC Church in Roslyn, NY, where she taught CCD and served as leader of the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts troops. She also served as President of the Mercy Hospital League. When she retired to Fairway Mews she served on the Board Directors of the Association. She was then a parishioner of St. Catharine’s RC Church, Spring Lake and was a member of the Parish Council and served as a Eucharistic Minister.

In her retirement she continued her common pursuits of golf, bridge, book club and traveling while enjoying her children and grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her first husband, Thomas Starr in 1986 and her second husband, John Chapple in 2010.

Surviving are her children, Thomas Starr, Jr., and his wife, Sharon, Christine Fetzer, and her husband Don, and Patricia Starr; her 9 grandchildren, Christopher Fetzer, Nicholas Fetzer, Brandon Fetzer, Derrick Fetzer, Timothy Fetzer, John Starr, Leah Tokar, Ryan Arnold and Spencer Arnold; her 3 great-grandchildren, Julian Fetzer, Benjamin Fetzer and Zachary Fetzer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Catharine’s RC Church, Spring Lake on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 10:30am followed by the interment in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.
