Obituary for Francis Kennedy "Ken" Farrell

Francis Kennedy Farrell, Jr., 60, of Sea Girt New Jersey passed away December 19th at home with his family.

Ken was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on January 10, 1962. He began his young life in Chatham where he and his mother, father & sister would grow to become endeared members of the community. He spent summers with his grandparents and the rest of the maternal side of his family, The Kreutz’s , in Sea Girt, where they have had residence since 1957. Though Ken moved away from Chatham for college, he has kept a close group of core friends from high school that he stayed in touch with his entire life.

Ken graduated from Georgetown University in the Spring of 1984 and left with another tight group of well loved friends. He began his twenty-three year long career at First Boston/Credit Suisse the Fall after graduating. Ken entered as an analyst and advanced through the ranks to be one of the only salesmen that worked across three different product groups as a product specialist in treasuries, corporates and mortgage backed securities. His versatility and adaptability knew no bounds. Ken’s charm, intellect and unparalleled work ethic earned him the respect of his colleagues, clients and superiors alike.

When he retired from Credit Suisse in 2008, Ken put much of his energy into enjoying his young family and the rest into contributing to Sea Girt’s community.

Ken’s Grandmother, Agnes Kreutz, nick-named him The Mayor as a young boy, a nick-name that would prove to be a calling. Ken Farrell was a fierce believer in all things Sea Girt: he began his elected public service as a Councilman from 2005 to 2011 and Mayor from 2012 until retiring in 2021. As a result of his leadership, residents today benefit from his fiscal conservatism with an emphasis on maintaining or reducing our local tax rate each year. Notable highlights of Mayor Farrell’s Administration include: Public Works Projects which were always reviewed with an eye toward utility infrastructure improvements, Wastewater Conveyance Improvements with almost every road project to reduce extraneous flows, and staunchly supporting the independent Sea Girt Library. He also was a key advocate of the Dune system in Sea Girt which significantly protected homes during Super Storm Sandy. Ken also participated on the financial board of St. Mark’s Church for 14 years. Ken simply loved Sea Girt.

Ken was taken from us after being diagnosed with FTD-ALS in November 2020.

Ken was predeceased by his mother Patricia Kreutz Farrell, father Francis K. Farrell and beloved Grandparents Dr. Paul & Agnes Kreutz and Thomas & Nora Kennedy Farrell. Surviving are his children, Michaela Jane Farrell, John Murphy Farrell, Ellison Anne Farrell & Tucker Davis Farrell. His wife, Jessica Murphy Farrell. Loving sisters Mary Elizabeth Farrell, Keilan Sullivan Farrell, brother Christopher Brady Farrell (wife Julie) and brother in law Ted Murphy (wife Marci), stepmother Theresa Brady Farrell and in laws Daniel Hayes & Deann Murphy. Also 6 adoring nieces and nephews, multiple cousins, aunts and uncles and a significant network of incredible, loving and supportive lifelong friends.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday January 14th, 10:00 am at St. Mark’s Church on Crescent Blvd, Sea Girt, NJ. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation with gratitude to the Joandancyandpals.org.
