Obituary for George E. Boyle

George Edward Boyle of Spring Lake and Marco Island, Florida passed away peacefully on February 22nd with his loving family by his side at the age of 92. He was born in Bayonne, NJ the only child of Margaret and Edward Boyle where he lived with his family until his marriage to Alice “Cookie” Dugan in 1949.

He was also the only grandchild of Sara and Neil Boyle of Bayonne, formerly of Pennsylvania. He was also the only nephew of Mother Cornelia Boyle, Mother General of the Benedictine Order, Elizabeth, NJ. George attended St. Mary Star of the Sea, Bayonne, NJ, attended St. Peter’s Prep, and graduated from Bayonne High School. 

He is predeceased by his son George in 1989 and his son-in-law Robert Lame in 2013.

He is survived by his wife of seventy-two years Alice “Cookie” Boyle; his brother-in-law James Dugan and his wife Betty (Daneri).  George is survived by his six children: Mary Jean Lame, Spring Lake Heights; Jackie and Michael Mangini, Wall and Marco Island, FL; Neil Boyle, Plymouth, MA; Caroline and Kenneth DeWyngaert, Rumson; James and Kitty Boyle, Steamboat Springs, Co., and Spring Lake; Margaret Mary and Denis Smith, Spring Lake - in addition to twenty grandchildren: Erin Lame Quinn and Colin Quinn, Robert Lame, Christopher Mangini, Sara Boyle, Matthew Boyle, Rachel DeWyngaert, Connor DeWyngaert, Devin DeWyngaert, Patrick Boyle, Kevin Boyle, Neil Boyle, Michael Boyle, Jack Boyle, Kate Boyle, Maeve Smith, Stephen Smith, Brendan Smith, Caroline Smith, Bridget Smith, and great-grandchildren: Colin Quinn., Dillon Quinn, Aidan Quinn, Padraig Quinn, Madeline Quinn, Scarlet Lame, and Harlan Boyle

In 1960 George and Cookie moved their family to Spring Lake where they raised their seven children in a home filled with love and laughter. “Pop Pop” was a big man with an enormous heart, strong convictions, and an interminable work ethic. He was an avid sports fan who taught all of us to follow our passions. He especially loved spending time in Marco Island and his home on Valandora Court in Spring Lake. 

George worked for twenty-five years for Exxon in New York City, for the New Jersey Highway Authority, as the liquor manager for the Warren Hotel, and the dining room manager for the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club. He owned Gallagher’s Tavern in Lake Como, Ryan’s Pub in Sea Girt, and the Amber Inn, Tannersville, PA for many years.  He was the head usher and a daily communicant for St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Churches, Spring Lake, throughout his life. He was also the head usher for San Marco RC Church in Marco Island. 

Viewing will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at O'Brien Funeral Home 2028 Hwy 35, Wall, NJ followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Margaret RC Church, Corners of 3rd and Ludlow Aves., Spring Lake.  Interment will follow at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt.
