Born in Queens, New York, Mr. Leonard resided in Glen Cove, NY before moving to Point Pleasant over 60 years ago.

Mr. Leonard graduated from Glen Cove High School and then worked at the Bank of New York Headquarters in Manhattan until retirement in 1989. His remarkable career began with acceptance to a training program, a position in the mail room, and many promotions culminating with him being named Assistant Vice-President of the bank in 1980.

Mr. Leonard’s career at the bank was interrupted by military service. He entered the US Army in 1950 serving in post-WWII Germany. He proudly served and was promoted several times before being honorably discharged as Master Sergeant. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal. Following military service, he was life-long member of the American Legion.

He served in many volunteer roles including as a member of the church renovation committee, an usher at the Saturday 4:30 pm Mass, helping run the food pantry, working on multiple clothing drives and tabulating / depositing collections for many years.

George was also a long-time volunteer at Ocean Medical Center in Brick, NJ where his caring smile and gentle ways were known to all. He was an exercise enthusiast and enjoyed walking and jogging every day on the Point Pleasant boardwalk with his cherished group of walkers and joggers. He also was an avid fisherman and a member of the Over-the-Rail Fishing Club in Manasquan.

George was a devout Catholic and daily modeled what being a Christian means. He believed firmly in the power of prayer and never hesitated to include the special intentions of others in those prayers. He regularly attended retreats at the Loyola House in Morristown.

George’s generosity knew no bounds. “Uncle George” never forgot a birthday, holiday or special event. He was always there to help organizations and individuals in need. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing and loving him.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday, June 17, 2022, at 10:00 am at St. Denis RC Church in Manasquan followed by internment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Sea Girt.
