Obituary for George James Lauer

George James Lauer, 82, of Brooklyn, NY passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Lauer was a Chief Engineer and Shop Steward for the Hotel Trades Council Union 56 in New York City before retiring 20 years ago. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps from 1956 – 1963. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, he enjoyed watching the former Brooklyn Dodgers and was a big NY Giants Football fan. He also loved to play chess and was a passionate reader.
Mr. Lauer was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Lauer; and by his brothers, Joseph and Edward Lauer.
Surviving are his four daughters, Suzie Rusak and her husband, John of Neptune, Christine Baello of Iselin, Valerie Chin and her late husband, Al of Hudson, FL and Victoria Carvalho of Monroe; sisters, Dolores Cleary and her late husband, Lawrence formerly of Hicksville, NY and Kathleen Zarnay and her late husband, Joseph of Port Richey, FL; his former wife, Valerie (Hawthorne) Lauer; and grandchildren, Victor and Christine and their daughter Lily, Jonathan, Danielle, Christopher, Alexandra, George and Thomas. George also had three step grandchildren; Jasson, Jill and Juliet.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 from 4-8pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home 2028 Hwy 35, Wall. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 10:30am at St. Rose RC Church in Belmar. Final interment will take place at Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY privately, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, it would be greatly appreciated if donations were made in his memory to the Veteran’s Wounded Warrior Project.
