Obituary for Gerald T. Barbato Sr.

Gerald T. Barbato Sr., 71, of Wall Twp. passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2023 from complications related to his having been a first responder during the World Trade Center terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Gerald grew up in Shrewsbury, NJ and resided in Fair Haven and Middletown before moving to Wall Twp. in 1997. He was a lifelong Communicant of St. James Church, Red Bank and earned his Bachelor’s from Seton Hall University. Gerald was a Lieutenant with the New Jersey State Police (Badge # 2939). He proudly served for 31 years, retiring in 2004.

He was also a custom home builder in the Shore area and completed his greatest fatherly accomplishment, together with his 3 children, of building lovely homes for each of them prior to his passing.

He was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Emma (nee Dill) Barbato.

Surviving to mourn this tragic loss is his devoted wife of 39 years Deborah (nee Graygor) Barbato, his beloved children and their spouses Gerald T. Jr. and his wife Anne Marie, Gillian Scott and her husband Jeffrey, and Tyler Barbato, all of Wall Twp., his cherished grandchildren, Jesse Taylor Scott and Jonah Alexander Scott, who referred to Jerry as “UB”, his brother Nicholas and his wife Gerarda, and his 4 sisters Diane, Nancy, Susan, and Marianne and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be on Monday, January 23, 2023 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at 10:00am at St. James RC Church, 94 Broad St., Red Bank, NJ 07701. Interment will be in the Barbato family plot at Fairview Cemetery, Middletown, 07748.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Oral Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 3401 Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19104.
