Obituary for Geraldine R. Galya (Nickel)

Gerry was born on October 11, 1923 in Jersey City to Rose Carr Nickel and Leonard Nickel.   Moved around to various cities in north Jersey as a child including Rutherford and Carlstadt.

Gerry went back and forth from New Jersey to Florida working as a waitress in a hotel restaurant in Fort Lauderdale.  She also drove a truck for the Army in Boca Raton during World War II.

Living in New Brunswick Gerry met the love of her life Andrew (Andy) Galya at a USO dance.  They got married in Hollywood, Florida on September 23, 1946.  Returned to New Jersey and lived in New Brunswick had three children Thomas, Donald and Ken.

They moved to the Point Pleasant Manor section of Brick in March 1955 when Andy was stationed at Lakehurst Naval Air Station.  Had a fourth child Kathy born at Lakehurst Naval Air Station.  Andy retired from service in the Navy after 10 years and enlisted in the Army.

Andy had orders to work as a physical therapist at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. so they moved there in 1960.  Returning to Brick in 1961 Gerry had her 5th child Robert in Point Pleasant Hospital in 1962.  That same year Andy had orders to report to Fort Kobbe in the Panama Canal Zone.  The whole family moved there for 3 years renting out the house in Brick.

Returning to Brick again Andy had orders for Fort Monmouth Patterson Army Hospital.  So they finally settled with no more moving when they returned in 1965.  Gerry was a busy homemaker who loved gardening and always had a big garden in the summer growing many tomatoes and other vegetables.  A great cook and baker family holidays and birthdays were spent at the house with Gerry with her apron on ready to work even into her 90's.  Her specialty was homemade pizza.

Gerry has 3 children, Kathy Galya, Robert (Jessica) Galya and Ken (Debbie) Galya who live nearby in Brick and Point Pleasant.  Tom (Lanora) Galya live in Arizona and Don (Betty) Galya live in Massachusetts.  She has 6 grandchildren Andrew Galya, Kenny (Roxanne) Galya, Katie (Chris) Emerick, Kelsi Galya, Claire Galya and Colleen Galya and one great grandson Jake Emerick.  Also, a niece Rita Stevens and nephew Sandy Simko.  Gerry's spouse Andy passed away in 2010 after 63 years of marriage.

Gerry was a good person and the best of mothers who went above and beyond for her family.  She will be truly missed by her children, grandchildren and other family members and friends.
