Obituary for Harry J. Kegelman

Harry Kegelman passed quickly but not quietly on Sunday February 2nd. His repartee with the nurse reminded all on hand that his quick wit was still intact.

Henry Joseph Kegelman III was born, at home, in Jersey City on 24 September 1924 to Mary and Harry Kegelman. He was well known around his neighborhood of St. Aloysius for his dapper dress and his love of The La Petite. Harry never let his school work at Xavier or Saint Peter's Prep get in the way of his social life. His charms did not go unnoticed by a young Mary Routh. Mary would have to wait as WWII and the US Navy were up next. Harry served in the Pacific as a communications Ensign. His grandchildren loved to hear his tales of his hijinks at Naval school at Harvard and his escapades on Okinawa. Post war Harry hit the books again graduating from St. Peters College and Rutgers Law School. Marriage to Mary soon followed, as did his graduation from McAllisters. Harry would divert from law as he joined the Routh family business, which would eventually become Kegelman-Routh Funeral Home. An institution in Greenville for over 40 years. Harry was a very active member of St. Paul's Parish and a founding member of the Parish Council. Life was busy. Four children followed his marriage to Mary which sadly ended with her early death.

When one story ends another begins, and that’s what happened when Harry met Lynn. They married in January 1969 and would dance thru the next 51 years together. If life was busy before it was now in high gear. One more made it five. Life was an adventure to be lived to the fullest. Traveling. Golfing. Hosting the world on Monmouth Avenue. Things picked up even more with retirement. Now he had to fit in golf daily. And then there were cards.....Sunday Bridge and Fairway Mews Poker. He hated to miss.

And all those he left behind will miss him dearly.

Harry is survived by his amazing and unbelievably patient wife Lynn. His five children and their spouses: Harry (Nancy) Brian (Joan) Mary (Joe Roberts) Cathleen (Doug Reynolds) Sean (Mary Beth) and his absolute adoring grandchildren: Nancy, Harry (Casey), Paul, Carter, Christopher, Michael, Kathleen, Meaghan (Joseph), Jay, Win, Hobbes, Finn, Jenny, Bridget and Becan. Loving great-grandfather to Hank and Aiden.

Visitation will take place at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall Township, Friday February 7th, from 4-8 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catharine's Church, Spring Lake, Saturday February 8th, at 10:30 AM. At the family’s request, those attending the Mass should go directly to Church.

In lieu of flowers donations in Harry's memory to St. Peter's Prep, 144 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302 will be greatly appreciated.
