Obituary for Harvey George "Buzzard" Keyes
Harvey George Keyes, Sr., affectionately known as “Buzzard” was reunited with God on August 29, 2019 after a long and valiant fight with cancer. He was a lifelong resident of South Belmar/Lake Como, NJ.
Harvey was born at Fitkin Hospital in Neptune, NJ on February 15, 1943 and was a graduate of Manasquan High School. He was trained in the US Army as a paratrooper and was honorably discharged being a Vietnam war veteran. He joined Earle Naval Weapons Station and retired after 34 years of dedicated service. He worked for the Armored Car Service for several years during his retirement until succumbing to his true loves… hanging at HaHa’s, Fishing, making fishing poles, hunting, treasure hunting in the beach sand with his metal detector, watching the Yankees, CNN, Westerns, perfecting his green thumb, making a mess with his lottery scratch offs, and most importantly being with his friends, family and loved ones. For over 40 years, Harvey gave back to his community by volunteering at the South Belmar First Aid Squad, serving multiple terms as captain and holding several offices for many years.
Harvey was predeceased by his mother and father, Daisy Carlotta and Robert James Keyes, Sr, his brother Gary Justin, his BFF Everette Larry Morgan, (aka ‘Larry Love’), his four-legged hunting Beagle squad, and his loving German Shepard Bear.
Harvey is survived by his son, Harvey George Jr. (“JR”) of Neptune; his soul mate Malinda Wendelstedt of Lake Como; his sister, Daisy Russell-Wilson of Brielle; four brothers, Robert James Jr. of Cottondale, FL, Steven David of Somerset, David Norman of Brielle, and Kevin Keith also of Brielle; his extended children Stephanie Holman and Lisa Samuels both of Ladson, SC, Nicole Wendelstedt of Lake Como, Tiffany Wendelstdt of Bricktown, Shaqua’l Cortez of Asbury Park; his former wife Linda Williams of Neptune, step daughters Cheryl Coleman of Woodbridge, VA and Janine Brown of Neptune; his four legged buddy, Crunch; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, special grandchildren, cousins and innumerable friends.
His amazing example of quiet strength, his powerful gift of love, and his hidden talent of unending sarcasm as seen in the affectionate nicknames he’s given to us all, will truly be missed, but will live in our hearts forever…
The viewing from 11AM – 1PM, going home service 1PM – 2PM and repass immediately following the service will be held at First Baptist Church, 410 9th Avenue Belmar, NJ on Saturday, September 7, 2019, officiated by Reverend James Jackson Jr. The final care of our loved one has been entrusted to O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, NJ. . In lieu of flowers, please send donations c/o Melinda Wendelstedt 717 18th Ave., Lake Como, NJ 07719 to help defray funeral costs.
