Obituary for Hon. James John Walsh
James John Walsh, 93, of Leisure Village, Lakewood, NJ died on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at his home.
Former Superior Court Judge James Walsh was born on January 15, 1926 in New York City, New York to Sarah and James Walsh. After graduating from Barringer High School in Newark, NJ in 1944 he served in World War Two and was a Sergeant in the 329th Bomber Squadron as a Navigator/Radio man. He then attended Rutgers University in Newark and graduated in 1952 with a degree in law. In 1951 he married the love of his life, Grace Marie, and they started a family, which would eventually number 10 children. After graduating from the university, he became a lawyer, and in 1957 they moved to Scotch Plains, NJ where he practiced law from his office on Front St. He was also town attorney for Scotch Plains and Berkeley Heights. He became a full time judge in 1984 for the Superior Court of Elizabeth, NJ. He was renowned for his fair and kind judgment as well as his sense of humor. He retired from being a full time judge in 1997 and worked part time in juvenile court till he was 80 years old. He and his wife moved to Lakewood, New Jersey in 1999.
His hobbies included sailing, the card game bridge, and reading mystery novels.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Grace, his son Brian James, his brother Robert Francis, his sister Elizabeth, and his parents Sarah and James.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Eugene Darke, his brother-in-law Theodore Bauer, his children Doreen Deel (Randy), Karen Sykas, James Patrick, Mary Ellen, Daniel Joseph (Barbara) Timothy Michael, Christopher James, Kevin John (Karina )and Theresa Schlenk (Richard), 16 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, April 5, 2019 at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd at Highway 70, Brick, NJ. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Holy Family R.C. Church, Lakewood, NJ. Final interment will be at a later date.
