John August Ernst, 90, of Wall died peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at Care One at Hamilton Assisted Living. Mr. Ernst was an educator for the Jackson Township Board of Education for many years before retiring. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he resided in Wall Township for the last 46 years. He was a devout Catholic and longtime communicant of Holy Innocents RC Church in Neptune. John was a graduate of Colorado State College with a master’s degree in History. He proudly served his country in the US Navy as a dental technician from 1950 – 1952. John was a member and former treasurer of the Oceanaires Barbershop Group for over 30 years. He also was an active member of the German American Club for over 20 years. John also was an avid reader and some of his other pastimes included woodcarving, oil painting and crossword puzzles.
Mr. Ernst joins his wife, Anne (Reina) Ernst in heaven. Surviving are his son, Kevin Ernst and his wife, Kimberly of Pennington; daughter, Linda Cortez of Parlin; brother, James Ernst of Brooklyn, NY; and 2 granddaughters, Tara Ernst of Pennington and Sophie Cortez of Seattle, WA.
In keeping with the Covid-19 guidelines, entombment at St. Catharine’s Mausoleum will take place privately. A celebration of a life well lived will be planned at a later date. To send condolences to the family, please visit the Book of Memories within this site.
