Obituary for John S. "Jack" McAleer, Jr.

After a courageous battle with cancer, John S. McAleer, Jr.,“Jack”, age 80, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2023, at Care One of Wall, NJ.

Born on January 21st, 1943 in Pittsburgh, PA to John S McAleer Sr and Loretta McAleer, Jack spent his early years living between Upper St Clair, PA and Ft Lauderdale, Fl. Jack graduated from St. Leo’s Prep in Florida and Parsons College in Iowa. In 1968 Jack left Pittsburgh for the bright lights of New York to pursue a career with Allstate Insurance. A few years later he would meet his future wife Ellyn (Brown) at the Jersey Shore. Little did he know that this would be a trend all three of his sons would follow.

On August 26th, 1972 he would begin his 50 year journey with his wife Ellyn, and  begin raising a family shortly thereafter, with the majority of his parental time spent in West Nyack, NY. Jack spent his entire 30 plus year career in the insurance industry working for Allstate and later going into business for himself. When not working he was a dedicated family man. Nothing made Jack more proud while simultaneously driving him nuts then his three sons. Jack spent many years volunteering his time to many of his son’s sporting interests. These included New City Rams, West Nyack Little League, Albertus Magnus football and St Augustine’s CYO where he spent 16 years coaching various basketball teams including his final year as a coach where his team won 60+ games and a county championship.

Upon retirement, Jack and Ellyn moved to Farmingdale, NJ. He spent a good portion of his time playing golf, pickleball and enjoying other senior activities. He also enjoyed cruising, spending time in Aruba, and being a true snowbird by spending his winters in Naples, Fl. Most of all his enduring love as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend will be remembered most.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, his sister Joanne McAleer Hough and his brother- in- law Richard Kocur. Jack is survived by his, wife Ellyn, his 3 sons Scott  (Cathleen), Brian, and Chris (Megan) and his five grandchildren Caitlin, Matthew, Connor, Brynn and Aidan. He is also survived by his sisters Jane Kocur, and Judy (Ron) Majeski and his brother Jim (Linda) McAleer, brother- in- law Tracy Hough and 8 nieces and nephews.
