Obituary for John Schotka

John Schotka, 86, of Point Pleasant passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 23, 2019. A native of Newark, John graduated from Central High School in 1951 and then entered the US Army, serving 2 years in Germany. After the service, he went to work at General Electric Company in Newark where he met his wife, Judy and after their marriage in in October 1956, they began their life in Bloomfield.
In 1967, John left GE to begin employment with the Township of Bloomfield in the Recreation Department. He retired after 27 years of service which included working on a task force for three presidential visits to the township from Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush. He moved to Point Pleasant 21 years ago.
He was a member of VFW Post #711, Bloomfield and a member of Voluntas Dei Institute and His Love Ministries with Fr. John Campoli. He enjoyed gardening with plants and flowers and spending time with his beloved dogs, Rusty, Misty, Roxie and Maggie.
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Schotka; brother, James Schotka; and sisters, Julia Tomaszewski and Anna Blancha. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Judith (Collins) Schotka; daughter, Susan Ann Schotka of Union and Point Pleasant; sons, John Michael Schotka of Brick, Richard Alan Schotka of Point Pleasant Beach and Michael Thomas Schotka and his wife, Jacqueline of Point Pleasant Boro; 2 grandchildren, Desiree Rochelle and Callie Samantha; and 3 great grandchildren, Logan, Austin and Brayden.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11am on Friday at St. Martha’s RC Church, Point Pleasant. Burial will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall. Donation may be made in his name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Foundation, Memphis, TN or to the St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, Madison, NJ.
