Obituary for Joseph John Scalzadonna

Joseph J. Scalzadonna, 87, of Brick, N.J., passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024.

Born and raised in Westfield, New Jersey, Joe was a graduate of Westfield Senior High School. After high school, Joe settled in Scotch Plains, where he raised his two children, Cindy and John, and later met his wife, Roseann, and her daughter, Donna. Joe remained an active and beloved member of the Westfield and Garwood communities as the owner of the Westwood, which he founded more than 60 years ago. His dedication to the community was recognized in 1984 when he was awarded Westfield Unico Man of the Year, and when he was named an honorary member of the Garwood Fire Department. In the early 90’s, Joe and Roseann moved to Normandy Beach where they lived for over 25 years before retiring to Princeton Commons in Brick, New Jersey.

In addition to the Westwood, Joe was the proud owner of J.S. Contracting, J.S. Electric, and The Landing in Hillsborough, New Jersey.  Joe was passionate about his businesses, and, with much pride, handed them over to his children, Cindy and John, and their children. In his downtime, Joe enjoyed watching (and complaining about) the New York Giants and Yankees, building his train sets, barbecuing poolside, boating, and sharing meals with the many people he loved.

Joe was passionate about many things, but nothing was more important or dear to him than his family; his most cherished times were spent at his dining room table surrounded by his family. He truly embodied the Italian saying “la famiglia é tutto.” To know Joe was to love and be loved by him; through his actions, he epitomized the meaning of love, support, and devotion. Joe will forever be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather (“pop pop”), great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, son, brother, and friend.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Adelina and Sebastiano Scalzadonna, his sisters, Anna and Illuminada, his mother-in-law, Irene (Delnero) Carlin, and his son-in-law, Thomas D. Williams Jr.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 44 years, Roseann (Dawe) Scalzadonna; his father-in-law, John F. Carlin; three children, Cindy (Scalzadonna) Williams, wife of the late Tom Williams, John Scalzadonna and his wife, Suellen, and Donna (Rahill) Berk and her husband, Robert; grandchildren, Erin Williams and his wife, Amanda, Tucker Williams, Joseph Scalzadonna and his wife, Sarah, Katie (Ball) Narla and her husband, Ashwin, Kevin Ball, Leah Scalzadonna and her fiancé, Adam Romero, Christian Berk and spouse, Stephanie, and Lauren (Berk) Forbis and her husband, Sam; great-grandchildren, Xander, Tristan, Avery, Finnley, Ainsley, and Leona; as well as many more family members and friends.
