Ken Hoang, age 91, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at his home in Spring Lake Heights.  Born and raised in Phu Tho Province in Vietnam, Ken came to the United States in 1975 and has resided in Spring Lake Heights for the last 47 years.

Mr. Hoang was a longtime parishioner of St. Catharine – St. Margaret Parish in Spring Lake.

Ken was deeply religious and taught his children on a daily basis to follow the faith.  He doted on his wife, Ngocanh, during their 63 years of marriage.  Ken showed a committed devotion to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  The highlight of his life was spending his time with them. His eyes lit up, and he had the biggest smile. His family came first above all else, and he worked tirelessly to be with them.

Ken was self-taught, was extremely creative in many areas, and was a gentle soul. He had a green thumb spending time growing all varieties of flowers around his home to enjoy with his wife and collecting/sowing seeds from year to year.  Ken tended his garden growing numerous vegetables and herbs native to his country to enjoy with his family. He was a fantastic cook and made ethnic meals/desserts from scratch instead of following a recipe.

Ken was always active, working his mind, fixing everything around the house that his children nicknamed him “MacGyver” because he could take anything and turn it into something. He never sat still to watch tv shows, sports, or a movie because he felt he always had something to improve. He would sew by hand and with a sewing machine to make things beautiful. He upholstered furniture with new fabric and could tailor any item to fit perfectly. Ken loved working with all sorts of tools and would spend hours in his basement and outside.

He had a great love of animals, including dogs, cats, tropical fish, and birds.  Ken loved working together with his son, Phu, on their MG Midget.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Ngocanh (Ann Elizabeth) Hoang in 2020 and his son, Phu Hoang, in 1984.

Surviving are his loving children, Dzung Hoang and his wife, Margaret, My Hoang, Camhong Nguyen and her husband, Luy, Thuha Hoang-Wu and her husband, Raymond and Yennga Hoang Perkons and her husband, Michael; his 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35, Wall.  A Mass of Roman Catholic Burial will be offered on Monday, May 16th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catharine Church, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake followed by the interment at St. Catharine Cemetery, Sea Girt.
