Obituary for Lawrence M. Cavanaugh

Lawrence M. Cavanaugh, 95, of Avon, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2019.
Mr. Cavanaugh was born and raised in Newark to Lawrence and Anne (Devine) Cavanaugh and resided in the Vailsburg section before moving to Avon in 1980. After graduating from Barringer High School, he enlisted in the Navy. He saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters, serving aboard the USS Nashville (CL-43) and the USS Mervine (DD-489). While on the Nashville he earned a Purple Heart for serious injuries sustained during a battle in the Solomon Islands. In 1947, he joined the Newark Fire Department, where he served until 1980, including many years with Truck 9. After retiring from the NFD he took a position on the staff of the Monmouth County Police Academy, continuing to serve the public safety community into the 1990’s.
Mr. Cavanaugh was predeceased by his beloved wife Ellen (O’Gorman), as well as by his daughter, Christine Ross, both in 2018. He was also predeceased by a sister, Mildred Null. He is survived by his sons, Larry and his wife Mary, of Ariz., James and his wife Debbie, of Tenn., Mark, of Fla., and Timothy, of Va., as well as by his son-in-law, Robert Ross, of NJ. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Ryan, Jacqueline and Matthew Cavanaugh, Jennifer Dawn Crim and her husband Joel Crim, and Kerry and Dylan Ross, as well as a great-grandson, Colin James Crim, and Mr. Cavanaugh’s sister, Jane Whalen, of Tx.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, from 2-5 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 424 Lincoln Ave., Avon, on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, at 10 AM, followed by burial with military honors at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Labre Indian School, at www.stlabre.org. Condolences may be sent via www.obrienfuneralhome.com.
