Obituary for Margaret Mary Jones (Tobin)

Margaret Jones (nee Tobin), 96, died peacefully on April 12th, 2022, in Spring Lake, NJ where she resided for the past twenty-eight years.  She lived a full and spirited life and will be remembered for her faith, appreciation of family, strong work ethic and her cheerful demeanor.

The eldest of six children, Margaret was born in the village of Bodyke, County Clare, Ireland on January 5th, 1926.  She immigrated to New York City in 1949.   She worked in Brooklyn and New York City where she met her husband Anthony.  They married in 1957 and settled in Brooklyn, NY and raised their family.  Margaret later moved to Spring Lake in her retirement years.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Anthony, a native of Scariff, County Clare, Ireland.  They were married almost twenty-six years until his passing in 1983.  Margaret is survived by her three children, Kevin and wife Kathy and their two daughters Livia and Antonella of Setauket, NY; Brendan of Spring Lake, NJ; Maureen (Mary) and her husband Paul O’Brien of Madison, NJ.  Margaret was also predeceased by her five siblings, Catherine McManus of Lake Carmel, NY; Mary Rodgers and Nora McNamara of Scariff, County Clare, Ireland; William Tobin and John Tobin of Bodyke, County Clare, Ireland.

Margaret enjoyed her career as a waitress where she was employed at several restaurants in Brooklyn and New York City.  In later years she worked in the executive dining room at several firms and retired from JP Morgan.  She truly loved the hectic environment and energy of working in the Wall Street area.

While living in Brooklyn, Margaret and her husband Anthony were members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Division 19. She cherished the friendships that she and Anthony made during their years of living in Brooklyn and being part of the Irish community there.  Margaret was known for her baking and sewing skills, making soda bread and Irish dancing costumes.

In retirement, Margaret enjoyed traveling.  She made trips to Ireland, England and Australia to visit family and friends.  She traveled throughout Europe and the United States.  Margaret also made two trips to Guatemala with the Catholic organization Unbound.

Margaret was an avid reader and one of her routine weekend activities was reading the local papers and the New York Times while sitting on her deck at home.  One of Margaret’s other favorite past times was entertaining family and friends at home over dinner.

Margaret appreciated the arts, especially Irish music and theater. Although her family and friends are sad she is no longer with them, they know that she lived a full and happy life.  They feel blessed to have had her in their lives for so many years.
