Obituary for Mary Agnes Gaine (Gaine)

Mary Agnes Gaine of Lakewood, New Jersey, died at her home on Saturday, July 18, 2020. Mary, born on August 14, 1931, was the second of seven children born to William and Catherine Gaine of Lissaniska,Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland. Mary had a very happy childhood on her family’s farm receiving her education at Holy Cross Primary School, Kenmare Secondary School and Ramsgrange College in County Wexford. In July 1952 she immigrated to America and was welcomed by her Aunt Minnie Ford in Bradley Beach, New Jersey. Mary was joined soon afterwards by her sister Shelia and her brother John, whom she generously helped to make their way in a new land.

Mary lived in Bradley Beach, New Jersey for many years. She enjoyed a successful 30-year career in banking as a mortgage officer with Midland Bank. Mary was a parishioner at Ascension Church and later at St. Dominic’s Church, where she was a member of the ministry. Her eloquent letters, birthday and Christmas cards were treasured by her siblings, friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary was an avid golfer at the Village Golf Club and loved to travel with her sister Shelia to visit family in Ireland and Maine. Returning on holidays to Kenmare and to her old home was something she would greatly look forward to every year. Her brother Michael loved meeting Mary at Shannon Airport and always remarked how Mary was immaculately and stylishly dressed. The children delighted at the Hershey Miniature Candy bars that she brought and were entertained with tales of life in America on the drive south to Kenmare. She adored visiting her relatives and meeting neighbors and friends, renewing old connections.

Mary was a kind and loving sister and a great support to her family right to the very end. She was a wonderful aunt to her twenty-four nephews and nieces delighting in all of their achievements. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Catherine and William, and her brothers John, Bill and Sam. Mary is survived by her brother Michael and sisters, Shelia and Kathleen. We will miss you Mary. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
