Obituary for Betty Haws

Mary Betty Haws, “Betty”, loving daughter, sister, aunt and Godmother, passed away on January 14, 2024 at the age of 98. Betty was a world traveler, avid skier, and patron of the arts. 

   She grew up in NJ and after High School attended Berkeley Secretarial School after which she retained a position as office manager for Dr. Kurzrock, a world famous OB/GYN on Madison Ave. While working in Manhattan she enjoyed taking classes at the New School in art, language, and music, as well as attending the Barbizon School of Modeling. She performed some light opera as well as appeared on TV as a dancer on the Lawrence Welk Show. She was recruited by Morgan Stanley & Co. on the strength of her incredible work ethic to become an executive assistant for Mr. Henry Morgan, one of the founding members of the firm, and Mr. John Young, one of the first officers for the company. 

   Betty had a fulfilling career with Morgan & Stanley for over 50 years.  Betty found a love of traveling early in life which was enhanced by her sisters, Patricia and Dolly, working for United and American Airlines respectively.  In retirement she continued traveling, wrote  memoirs for some of the Executives, took computer classes, gardened, tap danced, and was part of breaking the Guinness World Record for Longest Kickline. 

She was predeceased by her Parents, Rose E. Quinn and Luther D. Haws, her sister, Patricia Gartland and her husband,   Thomas, her sister, Rosemarie “Dolly” McGuire and her husband, Michael; her brother, L. Donald Haws; and her nephews, John Haws and James Haws.

 She is survived by her sister-in-law, Carol (Donald) Haws, her niece and goddaughter, Maureen and her children, godson Aidan, and Katelyn, her nieces Dona Lynn Lawson, and Eileen Haws Sivolella, and her husband John, and their children William, Donald, and Caroline.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:30pm to 4:30pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall Twp. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 10:00am in St. Catharine’s Church, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake. Interment will be in Hollywood Memorial Park, Union
