Obituary for Matthew J. Pungerchar

Matthew J. “Matty” Pungerchar, 83, died peacefully on April 30, 2021. He spent his last year close to family in New York. Matt was born on November 19, 1937 in Simpson, PA, and grew up in Iselin, NJ. In the early 1950’s, he played for Murray's Championship Little League team. Post Linden High School graduation, he attended Navy Bootcamp in Bainbridge, MD and served proudly aboard the U.S.S. OUTPOST (YAGR-10) beginning in 1957 and honorably discharged from The US Navy in 1963 having received a Good Conduct Medal. Graduating from the Newark College of Engineering as an Electrical Engineer, he worked at The Bell Telephone Company, Bell Labs, and AT&T. During much of his professional career he lived in Lincroft and Bernardsville, NJ. After retiring he lived in Brielle and Ocean, NJ.

Matt was kind hearted and supportive, had a sharp sense of humor, often quoting ‘Abbott and Costello’ episodes, and made others around him smile. He taught his daughters how to fish, sail, golf, vegetable garden, and to love sports be it the NY Yankees, NY Giants or Michigan Football. An avid NY Times crossword puzzler, he loved Frank Sinatra and listening to the radio.

Surviving are his wife Thespena, of Wall, NJ; two daughters, Valerie Young of Highland Falls, NY, (husband James; children Desi and Rex) and Christina Pungerchar of Weymouth, MA, (fiancé Brian Carlic and step-son Scott).

Per family wishes, there will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at https://www.michaeljfox.org/donate
