Obituary for Matthew J. Sharin Jr.

Matthew John Sharin Jr., 68, of Belmar, NJ, passed away on March 13, 2024. He was born on April 24, 1955, in Neptune Township and was a lifelong resident of Belmar, NJ.

Matt was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who was always first to offer a helping hand.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy, his children Matthew III (Meghan), Gregory (Marie), and Michele (Adam), his sister Patricia, his brother Michael (Merry), sister-in-law Gigi, his grandchildren Rafaela, Alfonse, Aubrey, Emily and Maggie as well as his nieces and nephews Nicole, Mark, Jenna, Michael, Doug, Paul, Elizabeth, Sarah, Stuart, Craig. He was preceded in death by his brother Mark, mother Margaret, and father Matthew.

Matt had a fulfilling career serving as an Ocean Township Police Officer for twenty-five years.  During that time he had the opportunity to serve as a two-time Olympic Police Officer for the Atlanta and Salt Lake City Games. Once retired Matt went on to serve as an Officer at Fort Monmouth and McGuire Air Force Base and spent the last twelve years as an Investigator for the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.

He was known for his unwavering commitment to community and public service, having served as the President of the Belmar Board of Education, President of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore, and as a member of the NJ Honor Legion and NJ State Policeman's Benevolent Association.  Matt was also the founder of Belmar Youth Wrestling and a founding member of the Jersey Shore Wrestling League where he served as coach and mentor to generations of local kids.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Monday, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm followed by a Funeral Service on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at 10:00am at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. Interment will be in the Sharin family plot in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.
