Obituary for Miller Preston Jr.

Vincent Miller Preston Jr. (and going by Miller), 87, born to Vincent Miller Preston Sr. and Mabel Preston of Manasquan, passed away on December 30, 2023. Born in Baltimore, Miller grew up in Manasquan, New Jersey, graduating from Manasquan High School.  Upon graduation, he went to Monmouth College for a year, and then on to Ursinus College, where he received his undergraduate degree in mathematics.  While at Ursinus, Miller fell in love with, and then married his late wife, Lynn.  Miller got his first teaching job in mathematics in Long Branch and then, when given another opportunity, he took a teaching job in South Jersey to be closer to Lynn’s parents.  Upon retirement, Miller and Lynn moved back to Manasquan where they both lived out the balances of their lives.

Miller believed in the value of education and was a committed mathematics teacher at Haddon Township High School for 37 years. As part of this commitment, he received his master’s degree in mathematics from Temple University.  Miller was also the long-time head wrestling coach at Haddon Township.  Over his long coaching time at HT, Miller won an astounding 398 matches and had two state champions. He has been inducted into the Haddon Twp HS Athletic Hall of Fame and the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame.  In 2023, Miller was inducted into the New Jersey chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor.  As if teaching and coaching weren’t enough, Miller was a lifeguard and later Head Lifeguard at the Manasquan Beach for 27+ years.

Miller was predeceased by his beloved wife Lynn in 2007.

He is survived by his devoted children – Jennifer (and Martin) Towner, Michael (and Maureen) Preston, David (and Sarah) Preston and Richard (and Mary Katherine) Preston.

Miller also leaves his 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many loving relatives and friends.

Visitation will be at O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township on Friday from 3:30-6:30pm. A private family funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday morning, with burial to follow alongside Lynn at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.
