Obituary for Richard Stephen Finnerty

Richard Stephen Finnerty, passed away at home on May 19, 2022 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was 76 years old.

He was born in Jersey City to Stanley and Mae Finnerty. He was the third of their four sons Peter (Ethel), Robert (Mary Helen) and Brian (Mary Lynn).

Richard and Phyllis (nee McDonald) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Hilton Head with their family last summer. Jennifer (Jason Dorwart), Elisabeth (Mike Walsh), Daniel (Magda) Finnerty and the lights of his life their six magnificent grandchildren Riley, Keira, Adrian, Emersyn, Bennett and Noah.

Rich taught math at Brick and Brick Memorial High Schools for over thirty years. During his tenure he coached boys' soccer at both schools.  He formed lasting bonds with his coaches and players that remain strong to this day.

Rich is a Vietnam Veteran and Colonel Finnerty proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserve for thirty years.

In his retirement, Rich actively volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the CAK Foundation.

Visitation will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35, Wall on Sunday, May 22, 2022 from 2:00 to 6:00 pm.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Denis Church, Manasquan on Monday, May 23rd at 10:30 am.  Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
