Obituary for Robert Joseph Malone

Robert Joseph Malone, 89 of Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, passed away at home on Friday, April 29, 2022. He was born at home on November 16, 1932 in Jersey City, NJ, to James L. & Gertrude (nee McGovern) Malone. He lived in Jersey City, Deal and Kearny before moving to Tinton Falls in 2002. He attended St. Stephen’s Grammar School in Kearny and Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington. He was a member of St.  Stephen’s Church in Kearny for 61 years.

He proudly served in the US Navy for four years in the early 1950’s, during which time he was a crew member aboard a patrol/recon antisubmarine aircraft, 50 feet above the waves in in the north Atlantic, hundreds of miles north of the Arctic Circle, monitoring Soviet commercial shipping.

He worked at Eastern Airlines, after which, he was an immensely proud member of the Kearny Fire Department. He retired in1993, after 32 years of service, with the rank of Captain. During that time, as President of the FMBA, he signed one of the very first collective bargaining agreements in New Jersey.

He met his wife, Marilyn (nee McLane) of Jessup, PA, on the beach in Belmar in July 1955. After a whirlwind romance, he married her in 1963.

He is pre-deceased by his parents, brothers James, Bernard (& wife Helen), Gerald (& wife Betty Jane), Leo (& wife Arlene), sister Sheila and nephew Timothy Malone. Surviving are his beloved wife of 59 years, son John (& wife Kristi) of Bluffton, SC, son James (& wife Catherine) of Lake Forest, NJ, daughter Eileen Farrell of Pt. Pleasant, grandchildren Elizabeth Malone, Daniel Malone, Alexis Malone, Sean Farrell, Brian Farrell, Kelly Brown and Katie Brown, his brother Thomas (& wife Kathleen) of Spring Lake Heights, sister Cecilia Maguire (& husband William) of Neptune, sister Alice of West Virginia, Sister-in-Law Nancy of New Mexico, and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Wednesday from 4-7pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35, Wall, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 10am at Holy Innocents Church, West Bangs Ave, Neptune. Private committal will be in the Malone family plot in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall Twp.
