Obituary for Ruth E. Hoppe (Ehren)
Ruth Ehren Hoppe, 95, of Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls, NJ, died of natural causes on April 30. A native of New Orleans, La., she moved to Alexandria, Virginia after World War II with William, her husband, (also a native of New Orleans) and Gwendolyn Anita, their daughter. Their second daughter, Louise Hoppe Finnerty, was born two years later, and completed their family. She and Gwendolyn moved to the Jersey Shore in 2013 to be close to Louise and her family.
With her daughters in school, Ruth embarked on a twenty-five year career. She was the school secretary at Patrick Henry School in Alexandria, Va. In 1961, she moved to the US Department of Defense Office of Research and Engineering. At the Pentagon, she was responsible for the oversight of millions of dollars for defense research projects. She took these responsibilities seriously and prided herself in being able to account for every penny! She retired from the Defense Department in 1984.
During her retirement, Ruth was active in the Elder Crafters Shop in Alexandria and the craft group at St. John’s Lutheran Church. At Seabrook, she participated in the Not Just Knitters and Crochet group.
Ruth and William were married for nearly 60 years at the time of his passing in 2001. In addition to Gwendolyn and Louise, Ruth is survived by her son-in-law, Dr. John D. Finnerty and her beloved grandson and the light of her life, William P. T. Finnerty. Ruth will return to Virginia to be buried alongside her husband William.
She is predeceased by her parents, Anita (Morel) and Christian Ehren, and her sister, Louise Offner.
