Obituary for Teresa A. Beriont (Payne)

Teresa Ann Beriont, of the Four Seasons Community at Wall Township, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was 99.

Terry as she was known to many, was born in Jersey City NJ on July 12, 1921 to Sally and Virgil Payne. She graduated from Linden High School in. 1939 and attended secretarial school, after which she worked as a secretary at Merck. On August 12, 1944 she married John Beriont, a WWII pilot. They settled first in California where they started their family before moving back to New Jersey. After her children grew up, she worked for 25 years as a bookkeeper, and when she retired, she moved to Wall Township where she has lived for the past 23 years.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John Beriont, her mother and father Sally and Virgil Payne, her siblings Dorothy Huey, Evelyn Leonhardt and Raymond Payne, and her daughter in law Roberta Beriont.

A young widow, she raised six children and made sure they all went to college. She was there for every baseball, basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, gymnastic, swimming, sailing, and dance, game/meet/recital; every school program; every high school and college graduation, and every birthday party, wedding and christening of her children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren.

She loved taking care of her home and garden and was a talented seamstress. She knitted or crocheted many, many baby blankets for her ever-expanding family. She sang in the choir at St. John’s in Clark and volunteered at the Wall Public Library, making crafts for the children’s programs. After she retired, she started painting and enjoyed giving her beautiful watercolors to her family. She travelled extensively across the US and Canada, and enjoyed trips to St. John, Italy, Ireland, London and Paris.

She was a great cook famous for her lasagna, apple pie, chocolate cake and zucchini bread. Those who know her know where her chocolate candy stash is...

She loved the beach and for more than 60 years spent summer vacations with her family, most notably on Long Beach Island, where for the past 36 years she celebrated the annual “Beriont Bash”. Locally she could be seen walking the Sea Girt or Spring Lake boardwalks or sunning on a nearby bench.

She always had a cheerful, happy outlook and enjoyed every day and every person she met, lending a supportive ear, or asking if you would like to join her for a “nice cup of tea.”

She leaves behind her children Drueanne Heaney, Arleen Palmberg (Bob Schembs), John Beriont, Daryl Beriont Jakucs, (Richard) Clinton Beriont , (Mary) and Trenton Beriont, (Donna); her grandchildren, Briggs, Prentice, Meredith, Andrew, Michael, John, Spencer, Griffin, Sasha, Laurel, Sally, Meagan, Brendan, Carleigh, Paige and Lauren; and her great grandchildren, Alex, Ava, Dallas, Colton, Haven, Matthew, Brielle, Roen, Kelin, William, Siralina and the newest addition Linden.

The family would like to thank Sesilia Adams and Kate Khabuliani for their loving care of Terry.
Remember Terry when you take a walk on the boardwalk.
