Obituary for Urie A. Parkhill MD

Urie Allen Parkhill, M.D. of Spring Lake passed away peacefully in Wall Township New Jersey on January 19, 2021 after a brief battle with COVID-19. He was a Communicant at St Catherine's Church, Spring Lake.

Urie was born in West Frankfort, Illinois to Urie and Dorothy (Rheinecker) Parkhill. The youngest of four children (older siblings Viola, Irene and Wayne) and raised in West Frankfort, Urie graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology. He entered military service in January 1942. Commissioned into the Infantry at Fort Benning, Ga., Urie was assigned there to the 4th Infantry Regiment, The Parachute School. After serving as a small arms instructor, he requested an overseas assignment and ended up serving in Europe in Headquarter Command SHAEF.

Upon returning to the States, he attended St Louis University, School of Medicine, St Louis, Missouri, from 1946 to 1950. During that time, he met and married the love of his life, Mildred (Pet) Drexler with whom he spent 68 devoted years building their life and raising their family until her death in 2018.

Urie interned at Fitkin Memorial Hospital (Jersey Shore University Medical Center) from 1950-1951 and had his Surgical Residency at St Louis University from 1951-1955. He had one year at Ellis Fischel Cancer Hospital, Colombia, Missouri, from 1955-1956.

Upon moving to Spring Lake, N.J. in 1957, he served as Attending Surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and as Vice President of Jersey Shore University Medical Staff. During his years as an honored surgeon on the Jersey Shore, he was member of the Monmouth Medical Society, N.J., American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, Society of Surgeons of N.J. Society of Abdominal Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Congress and The Royal Society of Health. He was a Surgical Consultant at Arthur Brisbane Treatment Center, Farmingdale, N.J. He had a medical license to practice in Missouri and New Jersey.

In retirement, Urie could often be found indulging his passion for golf with a round at the Spring Lake Golf Club, where he was a long-time member.

In addition to his wife, Urie was pre-deceased by his son John in 2005. He is survived by his daughter Ann Skeele and husband, John, of McLean, Virginia; daughter Mary Pat Parkhill of Ringoes, New Jersey; son Michael Parkhill and wife, Andrea, of Sea Girt, New Jersey; grandchildren Becky Jordan and husband, Rob, of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands; Margaret Griffin and husband, Chilton, of Arlington, Virginia; John Skeele of Washington, District of Columbia; Michelle Parkhill of Ambler, Pennsylvania; Kimi Markovich and husband, Dan, of Arlington, Virginia; Jack, Gabrielle and Victoria Parkhill of Interlaken, New Jersey; and four great grandchildren.

Due to COVID restrictions, the funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 25th at 10:30 am at St. Catharine's Catholic Church, Spring Lake, New Jersey. The mass will be available for viewing online on the church’s website (https://www.stcatharine-stmargaret.org/). The entombment, complete with military honors, will be a private ceremony at St. Catharine's Cemetery & Mausoleum.
