Obituary for Nicholas "Andy" Andrew Cromarty Warren

Nicholas "Andy" Andrew Cromarty Warren
Nicholas Andrew Warren (Andy) was born on May 4th 1952 in Kensington, London, UK. He was the third son of Ian and Barbara Warren. His siblings were Guy (born 1948), Adam (born 1950), Clive (born 1956) and Felicity (Fliss - born 1962). He passed away on April 2, 2018 in Brick, New Jersey.

He attended the French Lycée in London as a primary school - where he learnt to speak fluent French - and moved to Holland Park School for his secondary education. Here he formed a long-lasting friendship with Richard Markstein.

Andy spent his summers with his family on a vineyard in the south of France, owned by a member of the free French Air-Force his Father had trained to fly in Canada during the war (WW2). Andy cherished this time spent with his family and the family of his paternal aunt as they visited old villages, swam in the Mediterranean, learned to cook and eat gorgeous food. Their lives changed radically from the rather straight-laced Limey kids from London, to a band of high-living gourmets and sun worshippers!

On leaving school, Andy joined a small Covent Garden-based company processing and printing high quality photographs. This allowed him to meet many leading photographers and resulted in his becoming a studio assistant and photographer’s assistant for Ian McDonald. Andy moved to New York City in 1974 where he continued his career as a professional photographer and worked with Martin Wonnacott, Francesco Tonnelli, Brad Dixon, Elizabeth Fellacella and Robert Mapplethorpe. He also met another one of his best friends, Courtney Winston. Andy built up a widespread and loyal group of friends, clients and colleagues who valued his technical ability as well as his fun-loving attitude to work. He was known for his terrible jokes, madcap shenanigans and his impeccable flair for being just the right amount of silly on set or off set regardless of the situation.

Andy met the love of his life, Sharon Batteau Warren, while working on a fashion shoot in Manhattan. They were married in May 1990 and continued their love of travel, food, friends and sport. They traveled extensively throughout the US, Europe, the United Kingdom and Bermuda. Andy was an accomplished open water swimmer and completed the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, The Waikiki Rough Water Swim, The Maui Channel Relay and many Jersey Shore mile swims. Andy & Sharon were known for hosting a New Years Eve party at their Upper West Side apartment that included participation in the Central Park Midnight Run.

Andy & Sharon began spending their summers in Spring Lake in the mid 1990’s with many memorable and fun days and nights spent around the picnic table, daybreaks on a long board, days on the beach, biking in Allaire Park and celebrating Thanksgiving and other holidays at the “Love Shack” bungalow. They eventually bought a second home in Spring Lake. After 30 plus years in New York City they settled in Spring Lake.

Andy was a very loved uncle to Felicity’s children, Ella, Tallulah, Scarlet and Arthur and Clive’s sons Jamie and Fred.

Andy was the living definition of joie de vivre. His very tangible and fondly regarded memory will stay vividly in the hearts of the family and friends that he leaves behind.

A memorial service will be held in England at a later date.
