Ed was born on August 26, 1928 in Newark, N.J., the oldest of four sons. His greatest pride in life was his family. In 1955 he married his beloved wife, Gertrude Marie Fagan. Together they raised their eight children in Little Silver, N.J. before settling in their family home in Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Edwin Kleissler, Sr.; his daughter, Theresa Lynn Kleissler; and his brother, Richard Kleissler. He is survived by his wife Gertrude, daughter Mary Elizabeth Anderson (Tom), daughter Jeanne Marie McKeown (James), son Edwin Albert Kleissler III (Patricia), daughter Catherine Ann Hennessey (Michael), son Thomas Francis Kleissler (Amy), daughter Diane Elise Prentice (William), and daughter Joanne Smith (Brian); and his brothers, Monsignor Thomas Kleissler and Robert Kleissler. He was the proud grandfather to twenty-three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Ed graduated from Seton Hall Prep and New Jersey Institute of Technology. Always an avid learner, Ed also received degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology, Rider College and Harvard University. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Ed's generous spirit was evident in many quiet and humble actions toward friends, extended family and employees of the family company. He was a passionate biker for many years, and enjoyed companionship in convivial groups like the (basketball team), Briody Bunch, and the Dunkin' Donuts group. Pop will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Visitation will take place at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35, Wall, on Thursday, November 30, 2017, from 4-8 P.M.
